Tokyo, May 18, 2017 – Valeo showcases its latest innovations which contribute the CO2 emission reduction and the intuitive driving at the Automotive Engineering Exposition 2017, held between May 24 and 26 in Pacifico Yokohama.
The global automotive components supplier will conduct as Japan premiere a live detection demonstration of the Valeo SCALA Cocoon for object detection of 360-degrees. It will demonstrate the 5 innovations for the first time in Japan: the Driver Monitoring System, the Sensor Cleaning System, Valeo Electric Rear Axle Drive 48V and Blade damper for Torque converter. Valeo also presents its new technologies such as High Voltage Motor and Inverter and Heat Pump System.
The Valeo SCALA® laser scanner offers a unique perception performance combining a large detection range with a wide field of view, high resolution and accuracy. It works during day and night at both low and high speeds, scanning its environment for any kind of obstacles. This includes static objects like trees, parked cars and safety barriers, as well as moving ones like other cars, motorcycles and pedestrians. The Valeo SCALA® is the first automotive grade laser scanner on the market, making its debut later in 2017 with a German premium brand. In the Automotive Engineering Exposition, Valeo will make a demonstration of its cocoon application featuring 4 units of Valeo SCALA® to detect its full 360° environment.
Driver Monitoring is a new system that not only recognizes the driver, but also checks his or her level of alertness. This will ensure that motorists keep their eyes on the road when driving in eyes-on mode. In practical terms, the purpose of the Driver Monitoring system is to alert the driver when signs of drowsiness or distraction are detected. Other applications for the system are also possible, such as driver identification and control functions using the eyes. These developments will contribute to heightened safety and more intuitive use of the new generation of driver assistance functions.
Seeing clearly is linked to the sensor’s ability to operate correctly. To provide reliable information, the sensors must stay clean under all circumstances. For the Automotive Engineering Exposition, Valeo is presenting a full spectrum of Sensor Cleaning innovations for cleaning of front cameras, surround view cameras, rear cameras and laser scanners, ranging from entry-level models to high-performance, all-season varieties. Valeo-designed systems are characterized by the fact that they use less cleaning fluids. They also offer safety and comfort.
Valeo Electric Rear Axle Drive (eRAD 48V) is an electric motor to add the rear axle with 48V BSG. It allows higher fuel economy, 4WD operations in electric mode and limited Zero Emissions drive, depending of the battery size. 48 eRAD can also be used as a stand-alone electric propulsion motor for light battery electric city vehicles. Valeo's 48-volt solutions can be applied across all vehicle types, to both gasoline and diesel engine models.
The blade damper is the new Valeo innovative solution for dampening. It allows an effective stiffness without any internal friction. As a consequence, Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) performances are neither impacted by engine speed nor torque. It is a very effective solution for torque up to 350Nm, In particular, it is well suited for engines equipped with cylinder deactivation that change vibration mode whenever the deactivation occurs thanks to its unique progressivity. By design the stiffness curve is fine tuned for each engine torque and complexity remains very limited compared to pendulum systems. Blade dampers are available for any kind of transmissions: automatic transmission, double clutch and manual transmission as well as hybrid transmissions.
Valeo Siemens eAutomotive is providing the High Voltage Motor and Inverter for the new high-performance 7-seater SUV Volvo XC90. The powerful Drive-E powertrain delivers ~ 400 hp / 640 Nm combined with extremely low emissions (59 g / km) and high fuel efficiency (2.5 l / 100km, NEDC). The e-motors represent a step forward in transforming the e-mobility visions of automobile manufacturers into a reliable and affordable reality. Our synchronous motor concept represents an ideal approach, and offers a very high power density (~ 2.6 kW / kg). Motor length and diameter can be perfectly scaled with a power rating ranging from 25 kW up to a maximum of 300 kW.
In urban driving conditions in the winter, a vehicle in full-electric driving mode uses practically as much energy to heat the cabin as it does to drive. The thermal management challenge in this situation is to ensure the vehicle maintains an acceptable range. Valeo is also developing several architectures of Heat Pump Systems that offer optimal cabin heating and superior air conditioning performance with minimum impact on the electric vehicle’s driving range, using the latest standard refrigerant with ultra-low GWP (Global Warming Potential). In indirect architecture, Valeo’s heat pumps include the Valeo Water Cooled Condenser – winner of the PACE Award 2016 – which optimize driving range for battery-powered vehicles, allowing up to 30% more driving range in Winter conditions and 20 % in Summer.
